Permutation no. 1037
The book from which this page was taken is called “On heroes, hero-worship, and the heroic in history,” by Thomas Carlyle, originally published in 1906. I don’t know what edition I have, only that it is so old that the pages are so fragile, they fracture easily when handled. My edition is either missing pages with the publication date, or (less likely), it never had them. I have no recollection of where I picked up this book, but I’ve had it for many years and this is the first time I’ve used it in my art.
If you look at the detail image, you can see that there is an underline — presumably from a student who had been the book’s previous owner — which mentions good and evil. From this line, I knew I wanted to use a composition that illustrated duality. I ended up going back to a technique I first explored waaaay back in 2017, when I was living in Suzhou, China, and had just begun the Permutations project.
